Wycombe District Council serves an area approximately 125 square miles and a population of 162,000. It lies in the south west of Buckinghamshire, midway between London and Oxford. The M40 serves the district with three junctions (3, 4, and 5). The successful Chiltern Rail lines run through from Birmingham into London Marylebone. It is a District of considerable contrast and character, including three historic town centres, the urban environment of High Wycombe, the smaller towns of Princes Risborough and riverside Marlow, rural settlements and the scenic countryside of the Chilterns and the Thames Valley. The majority of the District lies within the Metropolitan Green Belt, which extends westwards towards the Chilterns escarpment and northwards to Princes Risborough. Most of the countryside is also within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which provides a fine setting for the Prime Minister's country home "Chequers". High Wycombe itself, set in a steep sided valley, has undergone a period of renewal and the district continues to address regeneration and environmental enhancement. The industrial base of the town has broadened through the growth of business and high technology activities, although original industries, in particular furniture manufacturers are still well represented in the local economy. Major companies include Dunn and Bradstreet, Volvo, SAAB, Verco, Ercol and Rank Hovis McDougall. Shopping facilities have been improved through a combination of town centre and out of town development. Most indoor and outdoor sports are catered for and the football club has a first class modern stadium. High Wycombe is known to many M40 motorway travellers for its John Lewis store and out of town cinema at Junction 4. The Wycombe Swan Theatre which seats 1,000 people and includes the Town Hall entertainment complex, is a central focus for live entertainment in the southern part of the county. Walkers along the Thames long distance footpath know the district from the scenic 12 miles alongside the river, while the north and west of the district are traversed by the ancient Ridgeway long distance footpath. | ||
